This session will shed light on the racial disparities in infant and maternal mortality, the most sensitive health indicator, with a focus on Ohio and Franklin County. We will explore the historical discrimination faced by Black birthing individuals and people of color and review the latest state and local data. The presentation will outline plans, activities, and strategies aimed at addressing these disparities. Importantly, we will discuss the vital role of nurses and how they can contribute to reducing racial inequities in maternal and infant health outcomes.

Session 1: Diabetes Medication Update: ADA Guidelines for Types 1 & 2  Diabetes

Session Description: Every year the American Diabetes Association (ADA) updates their guidelines for diabetes management in type 1 and 2 diabetes. This session will review treatment options for type 1 and 2 diabetes: how and when in the disease process to select specific medication, goals of use as well as how to mitigate side effects.

Session 2: Crafting the Happy Pill

Presenter: Mary Lou Garey, DNP, AG-ACNP, FNP

Session Description: Street drugs continue to rise in popularity and complexity. We see them in our wastewater analysis, patient populations and morgues. This session will cover known drugs such as Ketamine, new rave drugs like synthetic Cathiones, Cocaine, synthetic Carabids, and the new Nitazene products. As healthcare providers it is important to know what illegal drugs are in our communities, and know to identify and care for patient who use these drugs.

Improving Disability Equity in Healthcare

This session will review the foundations of disability in healthcare, focusing on health disparities and professional inequities. We will discuss the importance of language, foundational models of disability, and how to move forward together in a more equitable way to increase disability representation in the healthcare workforce along with reducing health disparities for the disabled community. This will be approached through a lens of strengths-based assessment and inclusion.
